Before there was Pearl Jam, there was Mother Love Bone. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament had already made a name for themselves in Green River as one of the best guitar and bass duos in the Seattle scene. But Green River split when frontman Mark Arm decided Gossard and Ament’s commercial aspirations were against his philosophies. He went on to form Mudhoney, and Gossard and Ament formed Mother Love Bone. They recruited Andrew Wood, the outlandish singer of Malfunkshun, who was well known his entertaining stage shows.
The band quickly rose through the ranks of the Seattle bands, making a name for themselves based on their energetic live shows. They got a record deal, and recorded their debut album, to be called Apple.
But it was not to be. Mr. Wood struggled with a heroin addiction that he eventually succumbed to, soon after the sessions for the album were finished. Stone, Jeff, and the rest of the band were crushed. Not only had they lost one of their closest friends, but they had come so close to the commercial success that they, and the rest of Seattle, had been seeking since the early 80s, and just like that, it was pulled out from under them.
Though the band never made it past their first album, there are a few bootlegs out there of the shows they’ve played, and it’s my honor to share one here.
